Jaén |
|
JAÉN
, the provincial capital and by far the largest town, is an
uneventful sort of place with traces of its Moorish past in
its ruined castle and in the largest surviving Moorish baths
in Spain. The town is centred around the Plaza de la Constitución
and its two arterial streets, Paseo de la Estación
and Avenida de Madrid.
Jaen
is probably best known for its abundance of olive trees which
dominate the landscape and punctuate the horizon, interspersed
by stark white-washed farms and houses against a deep orange
backdrop; the colour of the soil. This province is the world's
leading producer of olives and olive oil. Little wonder that
it is also the venue for the world's largest trade fair devoted
to this quintessentially Mediterranean crop which takes place
in Jaen city during the first week of October.

Despeñaperros
natural park
It
has traditionally been the only natural pass between Castile
and Andalusia, the Saltus Castulonsis which appeared in
the chronicles of Strabo and Polybius, which gives the village
a special historical character. This Natural Park of 8,000
hectares belongs to the mountains of Sierra Morena but it
breaks the orographic uniformity of Sierra Morena with its
impressive rocks and vertical cliffs. It owes its name to
a legend that says that, after the Battle of las Navas de
Tolosa, the captive Arabs were thrown down the mountain.
Its economic resources are cattle farming, forestry and
hunting.
