Granada
is located just at the point where the Sierra Nevada mountains
meet the fertile plain of the vega. Behind it are steep mountains
and in front there is flat agricultural land. I suppose it
was first inhabited and grew because it was easy to defend
from behind and although it is dry in the summer there is
always a supply of water coming from the mountain fueled by
melting snow, the rich soil in the Vega provided an ample
food source. The altitude is 630 metres.
Walk through beautiful gardens, charming narrow streets filled
with flowers, sit down in one of those typical taverns to
have some of that famous "Trevélez" ham and
local wine, and breath the centuries of history around you
anywhere. There are gypsies singing "Flamenco",
and don't miss to visit their famous "Cuevas" -
caves - in the mountain of the monastery of Sacromonte where
some of them really live still nowadays making magnificent
artisany. Granada's popular festivals, based as well on Moorish
as Christian tradition, are most attractive. |

One
of the most brilliant jewels of universal architecture is the
Alhambra, a series of palaces and gardens built under the Nazari
Dynasty in the 14th A.C.
This mighty compound of buildings
– including the summer palace called Generalife, with
its fountains and gardens - stands at the foot of Spain's
highest mountain range, the Sierra Nevada, and overlooks the
city below and the fertile plain of Granada.
Sierra
Nevada
Chief mountain range of S Spain,
in Granada prov., running from east to west for c.60 mi (100
km), parallel to the Mediterranean Sea. The highest peak of
the range and of the Iberian peninsula is Mulhacén
(11,411 ft/3,478 m). The range is a popular destination for
skiers.
This
moutains have a lot of tops higher than 10.000 ft with wontherfull
landscapes. You can walk at this heigth in summer, it seem
another planet because glacier ice was here thousands years
ago. Or you can see this mountains at the Granada plain. Then,
a nice place to see it is in Gójar.

The nature of these
mountains is quite unlike the more famous ranges further north;
there are no Matterhorns or Eigers here. The striking thing
about the high Sierrra Nevada is the sense of space and the
impression of vast scale. Although lacking the spectacular
peaks of the Alps, there are wonderful mountain corries filled
with sparkling tarns and jagged and pinnacled ridges. |
